一棵树 Vegetarian Kitchen

Jawa Mee for RM2? Yes, this was the promotion item by 一棵树 Vegetarian Kitchen in conjunction with its opening recently. More important, it tasted as good as those non-vegetarian version. We particularly liked the silky smooth sweet and sour gravy made of sweet potato and tomatoes.

We visited it on the second day of its opening and we were entitled to enjoy its Jawa Mee for only RM2. Unfortunately, the promotion ends rather fast (only until 9-Sep-2015). 一棵树 Vegetarian Kitchen is located at Golden Triangle, Relau, Bayan Lepas, Penang. Similar to some vegetarian cafes in town, it serves freshly made healthy dishes including pasta, rice, snacks and cakes in a comfy environment.

Different set meal is also available daily but unfortunately, it was sold out during our visit. We ended up ordering a la carte version of Homemade Braised Rice 卤盖饭 (RM4.90). 卤肉饭 is always our favorite in Taiwanese restaurants and we especially prefer those with lots of gravy. Vegetarian Kitchen version did not disappoint us – lots of gravy to an extend that we almost forgot it was a vegetarian dish.

It took a while for our snack – Homemade Tofu 家乡豆腐 (RM6.90) to arrive but it definitely worth the wait. The crispy-outside-soft-inside Tofu was lightly fried to golden and topped with unique XO sauce. You can easily finish whole plate by yourself.

We were actually not feeling well that day due to coughing and we noticed they did offer Cough Relieve Tea 咳嗽茶 (RM8.90). Our verdict? Try other scented tea if you are in the pink of health as this one tastes like Black Pepper Tea (It actually has a little soothing effect on our coughing).

As a whole, 一棵树 Vegetarian Kitchen is worth visiting thanks to its relaxing environment designed for LOHAS (Lifestyle Of Healthy and Sustainability) customers. Pricing-wise, it was rather mixed (e.g. some were reasonable whereas some at cafe standard). Perhaps a minor drawbacks were the weak ventilation in which we went back to office with slightly stained clothes. We believe it will improve over time. The cafe also has some merchandise items for sales and it opens from 10am-2.30pm, 5.30pm-9.30pm (2pm & 9pm last order). Close on Monday.
