We continued our Ramadan buffet preview to G Hotel Kelawai – the new and stylish-redefined hotel at Jalan Kelawai, Penang (opposite of Gurney Drive).
If you are like us who visited this hotel for the first time, we suggest you to arrive earlier to witness this elegant hotel with iconic design never seen in other hotels. For instance, it has similar classic floor tiles yet with modern walls set in dark color with dim light projecting through the gaps.
G Hotel Kelawai accommodates three trendy and stylish food and beverage outlets – Spoon; a coffee house, 2PM; lobby lounge, and Gravity; a 24th floor rooftop bar set to fulfill guests’ gastronomic appetites. We were visiting Spoon that evening for its Jamu Selera buffet in conjunction with Ramadan month this year.
Compare to its elder sister – G Hotel Gurney, the Kelawai hotel has different chefs in the kitchen. Most of them are relatively young and are passionated to create something new for the cafe. The Sous Chef – Ketut Gede Dodi is from Indonesia and have more than 12 years international experience. Chef Dodi makes the most authentic Bubur Lambuk with some g element.
Ong Ban Khoon is the Executive Sous Chef with 20 years of culinary experiences and specializes in various cuisine such as Szechuan, Cantonese, Penang Hawker, Nyonya and Thai. His recommendations for this Jamu Selera buffet includes Sotong Berempah Kuala Perlis, Daging Paprik Padang Besar, Gulai Ayam Pantai Merdeka, Udang Goreng Sambal Petai, Ikan Kurau Goreng Berlada Batu Gajah, and Kari Kambing A La Bakar Bata.
A uniqueness we observed in Spoon Cafe is that, instead of serving food in large tray, small portions of food are dishes out each time to make the line-up look exclusive and enticing while keeping the food fresh. The food will be replenished immediately when finished.
The stars of the appetizer line is Ulam-Ulaman, Nasi Impit with Serunding Ayam and Cold Seafood on the ice.
Not to be missed are assorted Kerabu. Beware that they can be quite spicy.
Cheese Corner which is usually found in some grand hotels is also available here. The way they utilize small space of Spoon Cafe to accommodate food from different categories is quite amazing.
We recommend you to save some space for desserts while you indulge in the spread because Spoon Cafe also offers mouth-watering desserts such as Sago Gula Melaka, Strawberry Slice Cake, Swiss Roll and Black Rice Cheese Cake. We liked both Strawberry Slice Cake and Black Rice Cheese Cake.
Another dessert you should not miss is their Gelatomio ice cream, which is rarely found in other hotels as part of their buffet spread. Flavors available during our visit are vanilla, chocolate, strawberry and wild berries. Rest assure that they really taste different compared to some common brands out there. Even the vanilla tastes as good as some premium brands, if not better. You may make it as a topping for pancake made from a daily action stall. Kurma Drink is also pretty unique here and tastes like red date drink. Kids will sure fall in love with the Chocolate Fondue.
