Christmas Buffet 2016 @ E&O Hotel, Penang

In conjunction with upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations, Sarkies in Eastern & Oriental Hotel, George Town, Penang (GPS: 5.42361,100.33472) is offering special buffets for those looking for a wonderful and premium dining experience next to the Strait of Malacca in the heart of heritage city. We recently visited the 5-star hotel for a Christmas buffet preview session.

Located at the new wing of E&O Hotel, Sarkies is the restaurant serving daily buffet to hotel guests and outsiders. Similar to normal day’s buffet, it is an International buffet during Christmas Eve/Day consisting mouthwatering cuisines around the world.  Some of the buffet highlights include:

Cold Buffet Section

• Beetroot marinated salmon side, turmeric vegetable pickles
• Homemade gravlax, fresh dill and lemon wedges mustard dill dressing
• Sesame coated tuna, Japanese seaweed and soba noodle salad, soya and ginger dip
• Seafood terrine and galantines
• Assortment of crunchy salads, dressings and condiments

Japanese Platter

• Assortment of Nigiri sushi, maki rolls, Sashimi and california rolls
• Wasabi, pickled ginger, soy sauce

Fresh Seafood on Ice

• Green New Zealand mussels, local poached prawns, yabbies, poached crayfish, spanner crab, fresh oyster with Salsa
• Cocktail Sauce, house made Japanese sauce
• Mixed seafood ceviche, coriander, red onions, lime, tortilla chips

Soups

• Butternut Squash and Roasted Chestnut Soup Herb Croutons

• Oysters Gratinated with Special Sauce

Carvery

• Roasted whole Tom Turkey, cranberry sauce, chestnut stuffing, giblet gravy

• Oven roasted medley of root vegetable, brussel sprouts, creamy cinnamon sweet potatoes

International Hot Dishes

• Braised lamb shank with pine nuts and lemon rind
• Seared snapper, pepper & coriander sauce
• Roasted chicken breast filled with seafood mousseline with crustacean butter
• Traditional assam king tiger Prawns
• Braised baby bok choy with superior mushrooms
• Yong chow fried rice with ‘silver fish’ in lotus leaf

Desserts

• Christmas pudding with custard sauce (Hot Dessert)
• Minced pie, Christmas stolen
• Ginger bread
• Panettone, Christmas yule log
• Green tea cotton cheese cake
• Mt. Blanc, pina colada
• Butterscotch walnut tart
• Liquorice creme brulée on Chinese spoon

The verdict? We particularly enjoyed Roasted Tom (male) Turkey which is also the Christmas special. Turkey may taste plain compared to chicken but if you pair it with side dishes such as chestnut and apple stuffing, brussel sprout roasted baby potatoes, carrot vichy, dress it with a layer of giblet gravy with mushrooms and cranberry sauce, believe us, it will turn into a heavenly delicious dish.

Of course, Fresh Seafood on Ice is always our favorite thanks to the fresh seafood in which anything fresher, you have to catch it yourself. During Christmas/New Year, premium seafood such as fresh and juicy oyster is made available so be sure to grab some before they are gone. Do not forget to grab some bites on the limited hot seafood as well such as Oysters Gratinated with Special Sauce.

Call us “Asian” (we really are, anyway) but we found the Yong Chow Fried Rice with “Silver Fish” in Lotus Leaf delectable. Maybe it had been a while since we enjoyed 5-star Chinese cuisine and we really missed the aromatic smell and taste from the premium ingredients in the fried rice.

Due to overwhelming food selection from fresh seafood on ice, Japanese corner, hot trays and action stalls, we usually had little space for desserts but still, we enjoyed mini desserts on spoons prepared by pastry chef with love.
