We have once again reaching the end of the year and in conjunction with this festive season, Eastern & Oriental Hotel (GPS: 5.42361,100.33472), George Town, Penang is offering par excellence Christmas and New Year buffets in its Sarkies restaurant. As usual, we visit its preview session recently…
Similar to last year’s preview, the buffet met our expectation, if not exceeding. Other than the soft and tender turkey, specifically for this year, we noticed shot glass appetizers (finger food) selection have increased. Finger food is a trending food meant to be consumed directly without using fork or spoon. Thai Glass Noodle Salad with Poached Seafood, for instance, has mid-to-large size peeled shrimp dressed with Thai chili sauce. Who doesn’t like the peeled fresh shrimp? Alternatively, grab a glass of Semi Cooked Scallops Topped With Herbs and Tomato Salsa for some Insta-worthy photos. Some of us will try to avoid rice or noodle dishes as they are quite filling but we give this Chilled Green Tea Soba served with poached chicken, green beans, nuts, seeds and Tahini Ponzu Dressing an exception.
Christmas buffets are basically an International buffet including Western, Chinese and Japanese cuisine. Seafood lovers will definitely benefit from the buffet. Sashimi, sushi and seafood on ice are just few seafood dishes in the buffet spread.
Of course, hot tray items and live action stalls are still available as usual during Christmas buffets. Some highlights include:
- Oven Roasted Marinated Chicken with fennel, onion, tomato and thyme
- Fish Cartoccio with fennel, mushroom, spinach, tomato, basil, and rosemary
- Homemade Meatballs served with mint and rosemary tomato concasse
From experience, Sarkies is always full house during the festive season so we strongly recommend our readers to attend the lunch/dinner as early as possible. Also, grab some mouthwatering desserts to your table at the beginning of your meal to avoid disappointment.
