Newday Porridge @ Lorong Selamat

Newday Porridge Restaurant

Newday Porridge Restaurant

Porridge used to be traditional Chinese cuisine and is usually inexpensive. Some common dishes are such as salted duck eggs, dried shrimps in soy sauce, pork colon, black bean fish (豆豉鱼), etc. Today, we went to a porridge restaurant (新园清香粥) at Lorong Selamat, Penang.

There are many side dishes available in the restaurant. Unfortunately, none of the item above are found on the counter.  Most of them are dishes for economic/mixed rice. We ordered few dishes and sit down.

The porridge is okay and clean, even though slightly watery.

Lala

Lala

The lala is not bad and is prepared on the spot.

Garden Pea Sprout

Garden Pea Sprout

The garden pea sprout (豆苗) also taste good.

Chai Buey (Leftover Dishes)

Chai Buey (Leftover Dishes)

The Chai Buey (菜尾) is a uh-oh. It is undercooked. The vegetables are still hard. Even the compliment Chai Buey come together with duck rice are better than this one.

Salt-Baked Chicken

Salt-Baked Chicken

The salt-baked quarter chicken tastes good but is already cold when it arrives. Feel like it is prepared early in the morning.

Loh Duck

Loh Duck

The Loh Duck is another dish which is undercooked… or underboiled… or whatever. The dark sauce does not penetrate the meat and is tasteless.

Fried Fish

Fried Fish

Two of us thought that we were not able to finish all he dishes. Surprisingly, this is not the case. We ordered fried fish. Thinking that it would be better compared to previous dishes, we dissapointed again. The fish has little earth smell.

Here come the bill, and it costs RM34.80!!! One of the most expensive porridge lunch I ever had. Is it plainly our poor luck of ordering wrong food during first visit?
