How to be successful in Sungai Petani? The simplest way is to keep your business running long enough. Even better, pass your business to younger generation and re-package it to catch up the trend. Old Moments Cha Chaan Teng 好味茶餐廳 (GPS: 5.64025,100.48053), for instance, is an eminent example of latter approach.

Saigon Bowl @ Beach Street, George Town, Penang
Albeit swamped with works, we decided to take a break by visiting Saigon Bowl (GPS: 5.41764,100.34232) one evening for a bowl of Pho (pronounced as “for”). Perhaps it was due to OktoberFest. parking was still a challenge despite after working hour and we parked our car one street away. Fortunately, the dinner was sanguine.
MC5TIME @ Sungai Ara, Penang
MC5TIME (GPS: 5.32575,100.27081) is operated by a Chinese family previously owning a franchise cafe at Carnarvon Street in George Town. Due to some internal issues, the family decided to move forward by opening their own cafe – MC5TIME. The new cafe is shy away from main road and is located same row with 三國果條湯 (3 Kingdom Koay Teow Th’ng) in Sungai Ara.
Art Nature Cafe @ ICT Mall, Komtar, Penang
For years, our impression about food in Komtar is that they are just some quick meals served by little shops hidden in corridors. While they are good for workers nearby, others may need a serene and cozy place for meetup or to rest their feet. Introducing Art Nature Cafe (GPS: 5.41417,100.32969) serving healthy food and handcraft coffee. We almost forgot that the busy bus station was just next to it until we walked out of the cafe…
Feast By The Sea @ Four Points by Sheraton Penang
This is probably the best buffet we’ve tried in Four Points by Sheraton Penang (GPS: 5.46373,100.30181). Introducing “Feast By The Sea” Buffet Dinner available every Saturday at affordable price. Singapore Chili Crab, fresh oysters, grilled seafood, sushi, sashimi and satay are just few items we enjoyed that evening. Anything fresher you have to catch them yourself (the beach is just next to the dining area after all).
Yin’s WholeFood Manufactory @ Promenade, Bayan Baru, Penang
Promenade is a new commercial-residential building located between D’Piazza and Elit Avenue, so new that the parking is still free and only few shops are currently opened, including Yin’s WholeFood Manufactory (GPS: 5.32398,100.28224). Yin’s latest establishment is a “cafe+organic shop” concept in which other than dining in, you can shop for organic products at Zenxin Organic Food Malaysia next to the cafe.
Village Kitchen @ D’Piazza, Bayan Baru, Penang
When was our last time visiting a Malay cafe? The new Village Kitchen in D’Piazza Mall (GPS: 5.32672,100.28347) is an eye-opener to us as the modern cafe is a truly Malaysian cafe designed for customers from different races. Burger Nasi Lemak, anyone?
The Leaf Healthy Recipes @ D’Piazza
The Leaf is one of the pioneers in Penang promoting healthy cuisine in modern cafe environment. The first outlet was opened at Lebuh Penang, George Town and we visited it couple of times since year 2012. For Bayan Lepas folks, now you have a nearer option as the second outlet (GPS: 5.41859,100.34114) is now opened at D’Piazza, Bayan Baru, Penang.
PSL Goreng Pisang
What to eat in Taiping? Answer: Goreng Pisang (Banana Fritter). No joking! Located in Taiping old town is P.S.L Goreng Pisang (GPS: 4.85269,100.74118) operated by a lady owner for about 30 years, from a roadside stall to a dedicated shop using only quality bananas. We were told that some customers even ordered 100 pieces back home.
20 Chulia Lane Cafe
It was one evening when we had an appointment at food truck corner of Chulia Lane (Lorong Chulia). As usual, we departed early to avoid traffic, jam, so early that we had enough time to visit both Kuan Yin Temple and 20 Chulia Lane Cafe (GPS: 5.41901,100.33768) before our appointment. The cafe occupies ground floor of Penang Hainan Tan Clan Association. Parking-wise, not sure about you but we were grateful that we usually found a slot along the narrow Chulia Lane.
